How clothing size systems relate

The US and UK use numbers (or chest inches for menswear), the EU uses its own numeric scale, and Japan mixes numbers and letters. Most of the world also labels garments S / M / L / XL. Women's and men's systems do not convert the same way, so use the matching chart below. Fit still varies by brand — treat the equivalent size as your starting point.

AA US women’s 8 is a UK 12 and an EU 40 (Japan 11, international M). The same dress measurement simply carries a different number in each country’s system.

QWhat is a US men's 40 jacket in EU sizing?▼

AA US men’s 40 (40-inch chest) is the same as a UK 40 and an EU 50 — and roughly a Japanese L. EU menswear is normally your inch chest size plus 10.

QDo men's and women's sizes convert the same way?▼

ANo. Women’s tops/dresses use one numeric system (UK = US + 4, EU = US + 32) while men’s tops/suits use chest inches (US = UK, EU = US + 10). Always use the chart that matches the garment.

QWhy doesn't my converted size fit perfectly?▼

AConversions line up the size systems, not every brand’s cut. Two labels at the same EU 40 can fit differently. Use the equivalent size as a starting point and check the brand’s own chart.
